SCRAP BOOK

On Saturday 3rd February five members of the club, (Jeremy Squire, Pip Taylor, Keith Brown, Ron Hill and  Mervyn Rose), Ron & mini barset out on the latest fund raising expedition – the aim was to collect old scrap metal and sell it to raise funds for our Club Trust account.

Arriving at Mervyn Rose's yard at Bagber we were expecting to find the usual yellow, sloping ended skip.  What we found was a vast straight-sided blue monster.  Surely it was going to take weeks to fill this massive space.

Amazingly, by the end of the day it was full to overflowing thanks to a large amount of racking obtained for us by Keith, along with various other "donations" from members and friends.

When we received the details of our efforts the following week we were surprised and delighted to find we had collected 4.9 tons which raised £343 for our funds.

RadiatorIt was decided, despite severe symptoms of exhaustion, that we would repeat the exercise on Saturday 17th February with the majority of the earlier team (Keith had just had an operation on his knee) reinforced by Janet Matthews and John Vilton; and this time I took my camera:

Lunch was generously provided by Joss & Eric Vining, Eric & TVafter which we started on Eric's yard

Actually with the equipment that Mervyn has at hand it was quite easy to move the larger items and there were no mishaps whatsoever.

Returning to Mervyn's yard with both a van and a truck weighed down with highly valuable (?) scrap iron including a vast quantity of chain and a massive 3 bladed plough, Jeremy decided he would learn a new skill on the "Merlo". Does it bite

While Jeremy was engaged in his practicing, the workers got down to the good old English practice of discussing the best way to get the job done.

Janet

Janet was prepared to fill the skip with anything that came to hand.  Pip decided he could stand no more of this nonsense and was going to hang someone with one of Mervyn's cargo straps. John just could not believe what was going on and stood back keeping out of the discussion.

FINALLY we made it.  Job doneThe skip was full, and, in fact, we had enough left to start another. It was in fact a very enjoyable day for all who took part.  Everyone was tired but felt it had been worthwhile both in financial terms for the club and environmentally.

We shall be doing it again in coming weeks, at least twice more.  So come and help, it really is good fun and if you have, or know of, an amount of scrap metal that we may collect let me or Mervyn know about it.

Our thanks to Peter Cowley, Eric & Joss Vining and Steven and Michael Samuels among others for the material and also to Jeremy Squire, Pip Taylor, Keith Brown, Ron Hill, John Vilton, and Janet Matthews.  A special "Thank you" to Mervyn Rose for the original suggestion and the use of his facilities and equipment.

COME AND JOIN US NEXT TIME.
