Sturminster Newton Statue Project

Peter Griffin

Denise and Peter Griffin have been professional Sculptors since leaving Art School in 1987 and have worked continually on private and public sculpture commissions in the UK, USA, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, India & Nepal.

Much of their sculpture is steeped in the tradition of Tibetan Buddhist iconography and after training with Tibetan master statue-makers in India and Nepal they spent over 10 years creating statues in temples and monasteries throughout Asia.

In 1997 Denise and Peter were commissioned by the Maitreya Project to create the prototype for a 500ft / 152m high bronze statue which is soon to begin construction in India. Once their original life-size statue is scaled-up the final bronze statue will stand at a height equivalent to that of a 50-storey building and will be the tallest sculpture in the world when it is completed in 2009.

Currently Peter is working on a prestigious commission for a large Buddhist Center in London. This will consist of twelve narrative relief panels carved in Portland stone, which depict the life story of the Buddha.

Denise and Peter moved back to the UK in 1999 and have established a studio close to the limestone quarries of Portland from where they continue to work by commission.
